A Pastor's Pondering
By Rev. John Stephen Brown B.R.E., Pastor

'Tis that time - that tense time - of the year once again. A time when folks fear, fret, and frustration reigns supremely. Why, pray -tell? For starters, it is estimated that the average American must work until May 9th of the year just to appease the accumulated tax burden. Someone else has indicated that it figures out to be approximately three (3) hours daily working for the statist government.

Taxes and death, we have been repeatedly told, are the two experiences from which homosapiens have no hope of escape. One would expect by now, if the evolutionary hypothesis were actually true, we would have evolved beyond these mundane, menacing occurrences.

It is reported - and rightly so - one out of one (1 of 1) persons born into this world will die. Death, like taxes, are man's doing. Surprised? When Adam disregarded God's directive for functioning in the garden of Eden, it precipitated the demise of humanity. Romans 5:12 explains: "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

Our national, state, and local government is sliding down the slippery slopes of economic collapse while wearing the skis of tax and spend. Why must taxes be raised? Simply put: Mankind has again disdained the principles of God, which if they were enacted and obeyed would grant sure success.

Do you really accept the idea of taxing only the rich? When that philosophy is embraced and implemented into our society it exposes the hidden crimes/sins known as jealousy, envy, and greed which have been the forerunners of theft. Wealth redistribution, as romanticized in the legendary account of Robin Hood, is plunder. Today, families are pillaged at the hands of the legislators, while writing themselves a pay raise.

You have heard it said regarding taxes, "You ought to pay your fair share." What is fair about seizing upwards to fifty-four percent (54%) of the earnings of an industrious individual? What is fair about a typical working American having to work until May 9th of the year to appease the claims of the combined government? What is fair about retirees being coerced into taking a menial job in order to meet the ungodly, unconstitutional property tax ultimatums or forfeit their homesteads?

Who wants taxes? Two classes of people: Legislators of the socialistic bent and the lazy ignorant populace that derives its benefits at the expense of their diligent countrymen.

Is there an answer to our current plight, or shall we just resign ourselves to the obnoxious experience? The enigma of death and taxes may both be resolved with the Lord Jesus Christ. Mankind's dilemma of death was satisfied when Christ died for our sins and rose up from the realm of the dead. Thus, one need only to repent and receive the benefits of the resurrected Saviour --- Eternal Life! Consider this neighbor: The Lord owns everything and requires that His creation honor Him with the first fruits - which is the tithe and offering. As trustworthy stewards, therefore, we should honor God. The choice is: Whom will ye serve God or man? To disregard God is to choose man; and he has utterly failed. But, My help cometh from the LORD!
