Liberty of Conscience
by Pastor John Stephen Brown

Liberty of conscience has always been an endearing doctrine among Historical, Particular Baptists. Upon this glorious principle our forebears stood in the ugly face of persecution. They withstood and suffered beatings and being rejected by those about them. Through their unwavering faithfulness, however, America won its liberty to worship God according to the dictates of Holy Scripture, as the illumination of the Spirit was freely given those brave, courageous souls.

Modern Baptists, so called, are not quite so noble as those fine saints of old. Today with the influx of destructive doctrines, many Baptists have been carried away with the sleight of doctrine from non-Baptists, such as the Darbites and Plymouth Brethren etc., and have become intolerant of anyone that does not adhere to their misperceptions on doctrinal issues. Although liberty of conscience meant liberty to believe and practice one's faith according to Scripture, the deluded dispensationalist, falsely calling themselves Baptists of this modern day, reject all those who preach the victorious message of Christ Jesus our LORD. Their established dogmas, decrees, and doctrine are less than 200 (168 to be exact) years old and are a result of distorted textual tearing of the Bible. More dishonest, unethical dialoguing, backbiting, and gossip has been practiced by those insisting upon dispensationalism than any thing else known. The corollary to the former condition just described is the matter of registration. These very same one's are often the first to insist upon unlimited submission to the apostate civil government.

Liberty of conscience? Yes, indeed! But for them, only if it lends itself to a restricted outlook, so it seems. Liberty to believe and practice the faith according to the Bible? Again, Yes! But once more, only if it is their established dogmas and decrees - albeit affected by modrenism.

What a shame! Brethren - true Baptist Brethren, it is high time that we return to the old paths. Permit Liberty of conscience to reign once again. Stop censuring good men of God for preaching a Victorious Faith. Use your liberty, dear friends, to uphold the cardinal doctrines of the faith once delivered unto the saints. We have some real battles to fight. Stop fighting one another over issues that can never be, nor ever will be, proved this side of glory.

May God be glorified in each of our lives!

Sincerely,

Pastor John Stephen Brown
