Thanksgiving, America's only Scriptural Holiday

"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;" (Eph 5:20 KJV).

Let us as Americans, not hyphened Americans but simply Americans, regardless of our ethnic and racial background, have a holy day - a holiday, if you will - a day to humbly give hearty thanks unto Almighty God, the LORD Jesus Christ, for HIS abundant grace and endless bounty.

Such was the case in early America when in 1619, a group of 38 English settlers arrived at Berkeley Plantation, on the James River near what is now Charles City, Virginia and offered thanks unto God. Regardless of the hardships these Bible-believing people experienced they offered thanks unto the LORD.

Without question, the Secular society will busy themselves attending to their day off. As Americans, so blessed of God, ours should be Thanks-living. Thanks should be rendered daily throughout the entire year, and not just in the autumn. Therefore, Christian Americans should faithfully observe Thanksgiving, the only Scriptural holiday.

Truly, it is a good thing to give Thanks unto the LORD! Our nation still pays nominal respect -- to whom or what is questionable -- by setting aside one day of the calendar year to express thanksgiving. Perhaps it's the trappings of a bygone era we are yet observing. I, for one, am thankful unto the LORD God Almighty that this holiday has not been eliminated, regardless of how others may observe it on the last Thursday of November.

"Thanks" and "Giving." Giving accompanies our thanks. Thanksgiving." A noun that implies action. "Thank" is a transitive verb when it describes an action toward a person or thing named in the sentence. First, of course, Thanksgiving is to Almighty God for the bounty of blessings bestowed upon each of us unworthy sinners both physical and spiritual. Next, our thanksgiving is to those about us - both friends as well as foes.

Why? As obedient men and woman of God we apply Scripture, notwithstanding how we may personally feel at the time. "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1 Thess 5:18 KJV)

Last year the question was raised by me in an article "Thanksgiving, what will you be doing?" In that piece it was shared how we celebrate this only Scriptural holiday in America.

Dear Reader, may I ask again, what is it you will be doing during "Thanksgiving"? The Bible says, "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: {2} To show forth thy loving kindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night," (Psalm 92:1-2 KJV).

Once again, thanks for allowing me to comment on this blessed holy day. Hopefully you, too, will celebrate by offering "Thanksgiving."

May God be glorified in each of our lives!

Sincerely,

Pastor Brown

"I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.  What I can do, I should do.  And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do."   - Edward Everett Hale
